The UK has a very advanced and successful system of apprenticeships, covering over 1,400 job roles in sectors ranging from agriculture to manufacturing, from hospitality to retail. Competition for places on certain apprenticeship programmes, such as the one offered by Rolls Royce, is fiercer than competition for places at Oxford or Cambridge.
Introducing the UK apprenticeship model to China
In 2013, the Chinese Ministry of Education introduced policy to run several apprenticeships pilots across the country. As part of this national piloting programme, the Ministry of Education would like to draw on international experience, and it has specifically identified the UK's apprenticeship model as a model to emulate.
Building capacity for Chinese and British companies in China
We are working with the Sino-British joint venture Chery Jaguar Land Rover to develop an apprenticeship programme built around their specific needs.
The pilot will ensure that the quality of production of Jaguar and Land Rover cars in China matches that of the UK operation.
Joint frameworks, joint qualifications
Shanghai Modern Logistics School and Tingtong Logistics are working with us to run an apprenticeship programme in logistics management.
We are using an existing UK framework as a basis and adopting the curriculum to the specific needs of the enterprise. The apprentices will receive a qualification issued jointly by a UK awarding body and the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.
