Rosalie making Zongzi 粽子 with students for Dragon Boat Festival
Making Zongzi 粽子 for Dragon Boat Festival.

I lived in Suzhou for one year, working as an English Language Assistant for the British Council.

Seeing their confidence and language ability progress throughout the year was incredible, and I felt proud of my accomplishments and of how I developed personally."

Teaching Chinese students was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. In a relatively tough education system, I tried to provide a space for them to relax and have fun whilst learning English.

Getting involved in school activities such as making the Zongzi dumplings for the annual Dragon Boat Festival really made me feel part of the school community, and it was a great opportunity to connect with the students outside of the classroom and to learn more about their cultures and daily lives.

My leaving party.

For my leaving party, I had challenged my students to perform the song ‘See you again’ by Wiz Khalifa, on stage in front of their whole year group.

You can see me watching the performance, wearing a traditional Chinese qipao and feeling like a proud parent in the photo."

Singing songs on stage can be intimidating at the best of times, let alone rapping in a foreign language!

I was also invited on stage to give a farewell speech in Chinese (one of the most nerve-racking experiences in my life!).

I received a beautiful silk scarf as a token of the school’s appreciation and I will always treasure knowing that they valued my time at the school as much as I appreciated their support and kindness.
