Introduction

The Shanghai Grand Theatre will kick off its 2014/15 Season with Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, a co-production of the Royal Opera House, the Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Shanghai Opera House. This early Puccini masterpiece just made a welcome return to Covent Garden in June this year, after an absence of 30 years, in a new production by Jonathan Kent. His striking contemporary interpretation of this drama of a young girl who faces temptation in the big city will resonate with many of today’s audiences, and illustrate that Manon’s story is still relevant in our own times. The score includes some of Puccini’s most memorable arias, including Des Grieux’s ardent ‘Donna non vidi mai’ and Manon’s nostalgic ‘In quelle trine morbide’.
