The “serial social entrepreneur” reflects on social franchising and the evolution of social enterprise and social innovation in China

Michael Norton, the pioneering UK social innovator, author and co-founder of UnLtd, has devoted most of his life to social innovation and social enterprise. Currently holding a professorship in philanthropy at Beijing Normal University, he is well versed in the Chinese social enterprise sector. In 2010, following a meeting organised by the British Council, Michael’s book “365 Ways to Change the World” was translated and published in China, where it quickly gained popularity among those in the social enterprise sector. In January 2015, he delivered a series of lectures on social innovation throughout China as a guest of the British Council.
We caught up with Michael to ask him about his experiences in the social enterprise sector and his thoughts on the state of social enterprise in China.
In a distinguished career that began in 1975, Michael Norton set up the Directory of Social Change, the UK’s leading provider of information and training to the non-profit sector. In 1995, he set up the Centre for Innovation in Voluntary Action to develop innovative projects worldwide. These include banking for street children in South Asia; village publishing in India; Changemakers, YouthBank and MyBnk, all providing opportunities for young people to take an active role in society; and FoodCycle, which uses surplus food to provide meals for the needy. In 2000, he co-founded UnLtd, which supports social entrepreneurs and is now spreading internationally though the Global Social Entrepreneurship Network (including into China in partnership with NPI). In 2011, he co-founded the International Centre for Social Franchising, and is currently developing support to assist successful Chinese ventures scale up their work across China.
He is author of “365 Ways to Change the World”, which has been published around the world, including in China, and two standard books on fundraising, the “Complete Fundraising Handbook” and the “WorldWide Fundraisers Handbook”. He has a professorship at the Graduate Business School, University of Cape Town, and is Philanthropy Instructor at Beijing Normal University. He is also the 2014 recipient of the UK Charity Award for Outstanding Achievement.
