International Women’s Day marks the progress made across the world towards gender equality, whilst questioning the prejudices and boundaries imposed on women that still remain. This dialogue also informed Maxine Peake’s 2014 interpretation of perhaps Shakespeare’s most famous character, Hamlet.
By being cast in a part normally performed by men, Peake challenged stereotypical ideas of gender to create an unusual and bold Hamlet. To mark this important cause, we return to Peake’s performance through an online campaign that examines how her character impacted performance of Shakespeare in a wider context.
