About the programme

The Generation UK Leadership Development Programme (LDP) is a British Council initiative supported by the Department for Education (DfE).

The programme aims to equip Generation UK alumni with the skills, knowledge and China connections to continue developing as globally mobile and culturally agile young people who can succeed and compete in an international business environment. 

The Generation UK LDP includes:

  • a two-day residential ‘Leadership in Practice’ workshop in London
  • self-guided online study to build Cultural Intelligence
  • online masterclasses with senior industry leaders on working across cultures in Asia
  • self-guided online reflection and assessments

Participants will:

  • gain access to leaders across industry, government and not-for-profit with experience in China
  • learn about leadership styles and how to build relationships across cultural boundaries
  • develop cultural intelligence and learn how to inspire diverse groups
  • undertake immersion visits to organisations with a presence in China and Asia to learn how they are fostering cross-cultural collaboration
  • be awarded the Asia-capable Leader micro-credential, a globally recognised digital certification

Who can apply?

The Generation UK LDP is only open to candidates who:

  • have previously participated in the Generation UK internship or Generation UK scholarship programme
  • are currently be based in the United Kingdom
  • are able to commit to attending all sessions (virtual and in-person) outlined in the programme between 26 April-17 May 2022.

How much will it cost?

The Generation UK LDP is a funded programme. Funding covers:

  • all costs relating to the scheduled program, including accommodation during the in-person programme in London
  • access to online learning modules during and post programme
  • an ‘Asia-capable Leader’ micro-credential, a globally recognised digital certification

Participants will need to cover the costs of their own travel to and from London.

When does the programme start?

The Generation UK LDP will run for three weeks from Tuesday 26 April to Tuesday 17 May 2022. 

The two-day in-person residential in London will run from Thursday 12 May to Friday 13 May 2022.

What is the selection process?

The application process is competitive. Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate an ongoing interest in China and the Asia region more broadly. There are two stages of assessment:

  • written application assessment
  • final selection by the British Council

We will also consider the following when assessing your application:

  • your ongoing interest and engagement in UK-China relations
  • academic or professional reference
  • academic attainment
  • your interest in developing your cross-cultural awareness and leadership skills
