The Thinking Abilities Framework is a tool for primary and junior schoolteachers in China that presents ways of progressively integrating the teaching of thinking abilities (also referred to as thinking skills or thinking capacity) into English Language classroom practice at three levels, representing Grades 3-4, Grades 5-6 and Grades 7-9. The Framework was produced following research conducted from April 2022 to April 2023 by the University of Reading (UoR) in cooperation with the Hubei Institute of Education Science (HIES), supported by the British Council China English Materials Development Award (EMaDA). The Framework maps thinking ability to the three levels, following expectations laid out within China’s Ministry of Education 2022 English Curriculum Standards. The Framework links understanding of thinking ability levels to classroom practice, and it is intended both as a basis for teachers’ CPD focusing on thinking abilities, and to be used directly by teachers when planning their classroom instruction.
